    • He hated his public school days. When in his nineties, there was some archive film of the First War shewn on TV. His son asked: "How on earth did you leave school and go through all that?" His dad replied: "If you had been at Haileybury, boy, you would have found it a holiday camp!" He had never had a moment's terror during the entire world war, in trenches and gun pits, that compared with being at that school. [JDT]
